What Is Stamped Concrete?
Stamped concrete is a decorative finishing technique where patterns and textures are pressed into freshly poured concrete before it cures. The result replicates the appearance of natural stone, brick, slate, cobblestone, or wood planks.
A slab is poured to proper thickness (typically 4 inches with fiber mesh reinforcement), color hardener is broadcast across the top, then large rubber stamping mats cast from real stone originals are pressed in by hand, section by section.

Color Options for Stamped Concrete
Pattern is only half the equation. Color is what makes stamped concrete convincing. We use a layered color system to build depth and realism into every project.
Integral Color
Mixed directly into the concrete before pouring. Colors the entire slab all the way through, so even surface chips reveal consistent color underneath.
Color Hardener
A dry-shake powder broadcast onto fresh concrete that adds concentrated pigment on top and increases abrasion resistance for a richer, more vibrant finish.
Accent & Release Colors
Applied before stamping, these settle into joints and low points to create contrast and shadow that mimic natural stone or brick variation.
Acid Stains & Dyes
For bold or unusual color, acid stains produce rich translucent tones while dyes offer an even wider palette. Often used for interior stamped concrete.

On-site color matching: Michael brings actual color sample boards to every consultation — not paint chips — so you see real concrete colors against your home's exterior.

Stamped Concrete vs. Pavers vs. Natural Stone
| Material | Lifespan | Maintenance | Install Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stamped Concrete | 20-25+ years | Reseal every 2-3 yrs | 1-3 days |
| Pavers | 25-50 years | Re-level, re-sand, weed control | 3-7 days |
| Natural Stone | 50+ years | Seal, re-point mortar | 5-14 days |
The bottom line: Stamped concrete delivers significant savings over natural stone and premium pavers, with a single-pour installation that wraps up faster and requires less long-term maintenance.
Stamped Concrete Maintenance
One of the biggest advantages of stamped concrete over pavers is lower long-term maintenance. No weeds between joints, no shifting pieces. But periodic care keeps it looking sharp.
Sealing (Every 2-3 Years)
A quality acrylic sealer protects color, adds sheen, and guards against moisture, freeze-thaw damage, and UV fading.
Routine Cleaning
Sweep regularly. Wash with a garden hose or pressure washer under 1,500 PSI once or twice a year. Avoid harsh chemicals.
Addressing Cracks
Proper installation minimizes cracking. Hairline cracks often follow stamp joint lines and blend in. Larger cracks can be repaired with color-matched compounds.
Winter Care
Avoid rock salt the first winter. After that, use sand or non-chloride deicers. Shovel with a plastic-edged blade to protect texture.

Stamped Concrete FAQ
What is the downside of stamped concrete?
The most common concern is cracking. Because stamped concrete is a single slab, a crack affects the whole surface. However, proper installation — adequate thickness, reinforcement, and control joints hidden within the stamp pattern — minimizes this risk. Stamped concrete can also be slippery when wet if not sealed with a non-skid additive, which is why we include slip-resistant sealer on pool decks and sloped surfaces as standard practice.
Is stamped concrete cheaper than pavers?
Yes. Stamped concrete costs significantly less than pavers on a per-square-foot basis. For a typical 400 sq ft patio, homeowners save 40-60% by choosing stamped concrete over mid-range pavers. You also get lower long-term maintenance since there are no joints to re-sand or weeds to treat. Contact us for a free quote to compare options for your project.
How long does stamped concrete last?
With proper installation and regular resealing every 2-3 years, stamped concrete lasts 20-25 years or more. The concrete itself will last decades. Color and pattern detail remain sharp as long as the surface is maintained with periodic sealing.
Can you stamp an existing concrete slab?
In most cases, fresh pours deliver the best results. However, stamped concrete overlays — a thin cementitious layer applied over existing concrete — can work if the original slab is in good structural condition with no major cracks or settling. Michael evaluates existing slabs on-site to determine viability.
How long before I can walk on new stamped concrete?
Foot traffic is generally safe after 24-48 hours. Light furniture can go back after 3-5 days. Vehicle traffic on stamped driveways should wait 7-10 days. Full cure takes 28 days.
Does stamped concrete increase home value?
A well-installed stamped concrete patio or driveway improves curb appeal and usable outdoor living space, both of which contribute to higher property values. Real estate agents in NW Indiana consistently note that finished hardscaping is a strong selling point for buyers.
